There’s not much to say when it comes to Erykah Badu. Stunning. Brilliant. Innovative. Okay, so maybe there are a few things I could say. She’s an artist as in tune with the world around her as she is the spiritual ebb and flow of the universe. Her elegance is something to be admired. As classy as she is, she never lets go of her honesty, favouring the truth over flashy bouts of sophistication.
“On & On” introduced the world to some of her brilliant storytelling as well as her masterful use of metaphor and imagery. Basing the video on the classic film The Color Purple, the video takes us through a day in her life as Ms. Celie, taking care of every aspect of house and home and still having time to sing her own blues however she sees fit. Ms. Badu is a grand artist, one that takes every aspect of the craft and gives the listeners more than what they could possibly imagine. This video gave the world something new to drink up, and in the 90s, most were more than eager to take a sip. As time progressed, she continued to elevate herself, but “On & On” was a defining moment in music and changed the musical landscape, taking honest and pure sound to all new heights.
